Description
Mamianiella coryli is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is a well-known pathogen that specifically targets plants of the genus Corylus, including both wild hazel and commercial hazelnut orchards, manifesting as a foliage-damaging disease.
The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of distinct lesions on the leaves. These spots are often necrotic, and as the fungus matures, it produces small, black fruiting bodies known as perithecia within the infected areas. Significant leaf drop typically follows, which negatively impacts the tree's vigor and photosynthetic capacity throughout the growing season.
Regarding its biology, the fungus survives the winter primarily on fallen, infected leaves on the orchard floor. When spring temperatures rise and moisture levels increase, the perithecia release ascospores. These spores are disseminated by wind or splashing rain, which leads to the initial infection of newly emerging spring foliage.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity and spread of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within the hazelnut canopy favor the development of Mamianiella coryli. Orchards that lack proper pruning and spatial management are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks and rapid transmission of the spores.
Effective control measures rely heavily on integrated pest management practices. The most important step is strict sanitation: removing and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate the overwintering inoculum. Proper pruning to ensure adequate airflow and sunlight penetration into the canopy is also essential. When the infection is severe, fungicide applications during the vegetative stage may be required to protect the crop.
