Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Maracuja mosaic virus (MaMV) belongs to the Potyviridae family, genus Potyvirus. It is a viral phytopathogen that primarily affects plants of the Passifloraceae family. The virus consists of filamentous particles containing single-stranded RNA and utilizes a complex replication mechanism within host cells, making it a difficult-to-control systemic disease.
Diseases and host crops: The primary host is the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). The virus causes characteristic mosaic symptoms: the appearance of alternating light and dark green spots on the leaves, leaf deformation, overall inhibition of shoot growth, and a significant decrease in fruit quality. Severely infected plants exhibit chlorosis, flower bud drop, and premature ripening of small, non-marketable fruits.
Biology and life cycle: The virus is incapable of independent movement between plants and does not spread through the soil or standard mechanical contact under normal field conditions. Its life cycle is closely linked to insect vectors, particularly aphids. The virus is acquired by the vector while feeding on an infected plant and is rapidly transmitted to healthy individuals, allowing it to spread quickly throughout a plantation.
Development conditions and damage: The spread of the pathogen is facilitated by periods of high aphid populations, often triggered by climate shifts or the presence of alternative host plants nearby. The harmful impact of the virus is extreme: it disrupts photosynthetic processes, leading to nutrient deficiencies in the fruits. Yield losses in infected plots can range from 50% to 80% within a single growing season.
Protection and control measures: There are no effective chemical treatments for plant viral infections; therefore, focus remains on prevention:
- Use only certified virus-free planting material.
- Implement regular monitoring and control of insect vectors (aphids) using insecticides.
- Remove wild weeds of the Passifloraceae family that serve as virus reservoirs.
- Practice strict sanitation, including disinfection of pruning tools after each plant to prevent mechanical transmission.
- Maintain spatial isolation between new seedlings and established passion fruit plantations.
