Maramiellus scandens is a basidiomycetous fungus belonging to the Marasmiaceae family. As a significant plant pathogen, it is known for causing localized necrotic lesions and blights on various tropical and subtropical crops, characterized by its unique growth pattern where mycelial strands "climb" along the stems and branches.

Taxonomically, it is classified under the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, class Agaricomycetes, and order Agaricales. It acts as a facultative parasite, utilizing organic matter and living plant tissues to complete its life cycle. Its ability to survive on debris makes it a persistent threat in agricultural environments.

The fungus primarily impacts perennial crops like coffee and cocoa. The disease manifestations include dense, white mycelial mats that encircle plant stems, causing tissue death, wilt, and eventually the dieback of infected branches. If left unmanaged, the pathogen can severely reduce the total biomass and yield of the affected crop.

The development of Maramiellus scandens is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus propagates through basidiospores that are dispersed by wind or water droplets. Once settled on a susceptible host, the fungus quickly establishes mycelial networks, especially in dense plant canopies that lack sufficient airflow.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective strategy for controlling this pathogen. This includes:
