Meliola is a prominent genus of ascomycetous fungi within the order Meliolales. These fungi are characterized as obligate biotrophs that parasitize a wide variety of plant species. Often referred to as a type of «sooty mold» or «black mildew,» Meliola species form dark, superficial mycelial colonies on the leaves, stems, and fruits of their hosts, distinguishing them from common saprophytic molds by their parasitic nature.
The host range of Meliola is extensive, primarily affecting woody plants, shrubs, and tropical crops. Infected plants develop black, velvet-like fungal mats that cover the foliage. This layer acts as a physical barrier to sunlight, significantly inhibiting photosynthesis and reducing the overall vigor of the host plant, which can lead to leaf yellowing and premature abscission.
The biological cycle of this pathogen involves the formation of specialized structures called hyphopodia, which anchor the fungus to the leaf surface and facilitate nutrient uptake directly from the plant cells. The fungus spreads through the dispersal of ascospores. High humidity and high temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for the rapid germination and colonization of new host tissues.
Epidemiological spread is often exacerbated by the presence of sap-sucking insects like scales or aphids, which produce honeydew—a substrate that promotes fungal growth. Poor air circulation in orchards and nurseries provides the stagnant environment necessary for the spores to thrive and establish persistent infections on susceptible crop varieties.
Management of Meliola requires a multi-faceted strategy focused on sanitation and pest control. Key measures include:
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts.
- Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control sap-sucking insects.
- Thinning out canopy density to increase light penetration and airflow.
- Applying appropriate systemic or contact fungicides to suppress fungal growth during high-risk seasons.
