Description

The root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne) is a genus of sedentary endoparasitic nematodes that causes significant economic losses in global agriculture. Belonging to the family Heteroderidae, these microscopic organisms are notorious for forming characteristic galls or knots on the root systems of host plants, which disrupt the plant's vascular system.

The disease caused by these parasites, known as meloidogynosis, manifests through stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during periods of heat stress. Because the root system is damaged and unable to function properly, the plant cannot absorb sufficient water or nutrients, leading to reduced photosynthesis and often complete crop failure in heavily infested fields or greenhouses.

The life cycle begins when second-stage larvae enter the roots, where they establish specialized feeding sites. Once inside, they induce cell hypertrophy, leading to the characteristic gall formation. Females become sedentary, swell into a pear-shaped form, and deposit their eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix, either inside or on the surface of the roots.

These nematodes thrive in warm, sandy-textured soils with consistent moisture, making greenhouse environments particularly susceptible to rapid outbreaks. Their ability to persist in the soil as eggs for long periods, coupled with their wide host range, makes them extremely difficult to eradicate once a field or facility has become contaminated.

Management of Meloidogyne requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include the use of certified nematode-free seedlings, resistant crop cultivars, and systematic crop rotation with non-host species. In intensive production, soil solarization, steam sterilization, and the application of biological agents, such as nematode-trapping fungi, are essential to maintain population levels below the economic damage threshold.
