This DNA virus is known for causing systemic infections that severely impair plant metabolism and reduce agricultural productivity globally.
The disease symptoms typically manifest as distinctive chlorotic spots on leaves, leading to mosaic patterns and severe leaf curling. Infected plants often exhibit stunted development and reduced vigor, which prevents them from reaching their full yield potential. The quality of the fruit is compromised, with irregular shape and reduced flavor, often leading to total crop rejection in commercial markets.
The biology of the pathogen relies heavily on the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which serves as the primary vector.
