Melon yellow mosaic virus (MelYV), classified under the genus Comovirus, is a significant plant pathogen affecting various cucurbitaceous crops. This virus causes systemic infections that disrupt plant physiology, leading to reduced photosynthesis and overall crop failure if left unmanaged.
The virus primarily infects melons, watermelons, cucumbers, and squash. Affected plants display diagnostic symptoms such as yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, stunted growth, and reduced fruit size. Infected fruits often exhibit quality defects, rendering them unsuitable for market.
The biological cycle of MelYV is characterized by its dependence on insect vectors. Aphids act as the primary transmission agents, acquiring the virus during brief feeding sessions on infected plants and transmitting it to healthy ones. This non-persistent mode of transmission allows for rapid spread within and between fields.
Environmental conditions, particularly temperature and humidity, play a critical role in disease propagation. Warmer temperatures favor the rapid development of aphid populations, leading to increased vector activity and higher incidence rates of the virus across susceptible host crops.
