Description
Systematic position and pathogen type. The genus Merlinius belongs to the phylum Nematoda. These are microscopic roundworms that function as obligate ectoparasites. Unlike endoparasitic nematodes that burrow deep inside roots, Merlinius species feed from the outside, using their hollow needle-like stylet to pierce root cells and extract nutrients, which disrupts the plant's ability to maintain optimal physiological processes.
Diseases and host plants. Merlinius nematodes affect a broad range of crops, including cereals, forage grasses, legumes, and various vegetables. Infestation leads to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and reduced root system vigor. Crops infested with these nematodes are often less capable of nutrient uptake, resulting in lower yield quality and quantity, especially under stressful environmental conditions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The entire process occurs in the soil rhizosphere. These nematodes are highly adaptable, capable of surviving in soil for extended periods even in the absence of a preferred host plant by entering a state of dormancy or diapause, which ensures their persistence in agricultural fields year after year.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. These nematodes prefer well-aerated, sandy or light-textured soils where migration between root sites is easier. Their harmfulness is characterized by the physical destruction of root hairs and epidermal tissues. This damage inhibits root growth, stunts the development of the entire plant, and creates entry points for secondary infections caused by soil-borne fungi and bacteria.
Protection and control measures. Management strategies should be integrated to reduce the soil population density.
- Implementing diverse crop rotations that include non-host or antagonistic species.
- Stringent weed control to eliminate alternative hosts for the nematodes.
- Using certified clean planting material to prevent field introduction.
- Soil health management, including organic amendments to support beneficial organisms.
- Application of nematicides or biological control agents when the nematode threshold is exceeded.
