Description
Microsphaera euphorbiae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Kingdom Fungi, Phylum Ascomycota, and Order Erysiphales. It acts as an obligate parasite, primarily infecting plants of the Euphorbiaceae family, specifically the genus Euphorbia, causing powdery mildew disease.
The disease is identified by the presence of white, powdery mycelium that coats leaves, stems, and shoots. As the infection progresses, the fungal hyphae penetrate the plant epidermis to derive nutrients, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and potential necrosis of the affected plant tissues.
The life cycle of the pathogen includes the production of asexual conidia during the growing season, which are easily disseminated by wind to infect healthy tissues. Towards the end of the season, the fungus produces chasmothecia (formerly known as cleistothecia), which are sexual fruiting bodies allowing the fungus to overwinter on plant debris.
Favorable conditions for the development and spread of Microsphaera euphorbiae include high humidity and temperatures ranging between 18°C and 25°C. Dense foliage, poor air circulation, and shading are major environmental factors that accelerate the rapid spread of spores throughout a crop.
Economic damage is caused by the physiological weakening of the host plant, reducing the vigor and photosynthetic efficiency. Control measures include cultural practices such as removing infested debris and ensuring proper spacing. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides, including sulfur-based products, triazoles, or strobilurins, applied at the first sign of symptoms.
