It belongs to the Erysiphaceae family and is recognized as one of the primary agents responsible for powdery mildew infections on various woody plants, including alder (Alnus) and hazel (Corylus) species.
The disease caused by this fungus, known as powdery mildew, is identified by the presence of a white, mycelial coating on leaves and young stems. As the infection progresses, the fungus produces specialized structures called haustoria, which penetrate the plant epidermis to absorb nutrients, eventually leading to chlorosis and tissue necrosis.
The life cycle of Microsphaera penicillata involves both asexual and sexual reproduction. During the growing season, conidia are produced in large quantities and dispersed by wind to healthy tissues.
