Monilia urnula is a specialized phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Monilia. This pathogen primarily affects plants within the Ericaceae family, most notably blueberries, bilberries, and cranberries, acting as a significant threat to commercial berry production worldwide.

The fungus is responsible for moniliosis, a disease characterized by the blight of shoots, flowers, and fruits. Affected plant tissues typically exhibit sudden wilting, followed by browning or blackening. Under high humidity conditions, a conspicuous gray or light brown mass of conidial spores develops on the infected areas, facilitating rapid secondary spread of the disease within the crop canopy.

The life cycle of Monilia urnula is strictly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. The pathogen overwinters as sclerotia within mummified berries that persist on the soil surface or remain attached to the plant. Upon the return of favorable spring conditions, typically involving moderate temperatures and high humidity, the sclerotia germinate to produce apothecia that release ascospores to initiate primary infections.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence and impact of the fungus. Excessive rainfall, fog, and persistent moisture during the flowering phase create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. Since the pathogen infects the blossoms, it quickly advances into the developing ovaries, ultimately causing fruit mummification and substantial reduction in marketable yield.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach combining cultural and chemical practices. Sanitation is paramount, involving the removal and destruction of all mummified berries and infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum level. During the critical periods of bloom, the application of targeted fungicides, such as those in the triazole or strobilurin classes, is essential to prevent primary infections and ensure successful harvest outcomes.
