It is a highly specialized necrotrophic pathogen that specifically targets plants within the Ericaceae family, causing serious fungal diseases that affect reproductive structures.

Diseases and Host Plants: The primary disease caused by this pathogen is known as "berry mummification." Its main hosts are wild and cultivated members of the Vaccinium genus, specifically bog bilberry, lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). The disease manifests as a complete transformation of the developing fruit into a hard, blackened, sterile structure.

Biology and Life Cycle: The life cycle of Monilinia urnula is biphasic and closely linked to the host's flowering season. Overwintering occurs in the soil as sclerotia, which are formed inside mummified berries from the previous season. In the spring, these sclerotia produce apothecia (cup-shaped fruiting bodies) that release ascospores. These spores infect the developing ovaries of the flowers, leading to the rapid decay and hardening of the berry into a new sclerotium by the end of the season.

Developmental Conditions and Damage: The pathogen thrives in humid, cool conditions during the flowering stage, which facilitate spore dispersal and successful infection. The economic impact is severe, as the infection renders the entire crop unmarketable and inedible. High levels of disease incidence significantly decrease the yield, posing a major challenge for commercial berry production and wild harvest industries.

Protection and Control Measures: Controlling Monilinia urnula requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:
