Mycoleptodiscus terrestris is a soil-borne fungal pathogen classified within the order Melanconiales. It is primarily recognized for its ability to cause root and crown rots in various terrestrial crops, most notably soybeans. In addition to its status as a crop pathogen, it has been researched for its potential as a biological control agent against invasive aquatic macrophytes.

The disease caused by this fungus typically manifests as necrosis of the root system. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and in severe cases, pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off. By compromising the root integrity, the fungus prevents the plant from effectively absorbing water and essential nutrients, which leads to significant yield losses in commercial agriculture.

The life cycle of M. terrestris is characterized by the production of acervuli, which are specialized reproductive structures. These structures generate conidia, which act as the primary inocula for spreading the infection. The fungus is highly persistent and can survive as mycelium or sclerotia-like aggregates within plant debris or directly in the soil matrix for extended periods.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of the pathogen. High soil moisture levels and warm temperatures (ranging from 25°C to 30°C) are optimal for its development and infection process. Waterlogged fields or poorly drained soils create an ideal environment for the fungus to colonize roots, often causing the most damage during the early growth stages of the plant.

Management and control strategies are focused on limiting the inoculum buildup in the soil. Key agricultural practices include implementing long-term crop rotation to exhaust the soil-borne population of the pathogen. Furthermore, optimizing soil drainage and managing irrigation practices to avoid saturation are essential. Chemical control is limited, making the use of high-quality, treated seeds and organic matter management the primary defense tactics.
