Description

Mycosphaerella capsellae is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Mycosphaerellaceae family. It is widely recognized in agriculture as the causal agent of white leaf spot, an economically significant disease affecting various cruciferous crops, particularly oilseed rape (Brassica napus).

The disease primarily manifests on the leaves, starting as small, discrete spots that expand into irregular, pale, or whitish lesions. As the infection progresses, these spots often coalesce, leading to severe leaf necrosis, premature senescence, and defoliation. Besides oilseed rape, the pathogen can also infect wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as alternative hosts for the fungus.

The life cycle of Mycosphaerella capsellae is complex, involving both sexual and asexual stages. The fungus overwinters in infected crop debris as pseudothecia. Under favorable spring conditions, ascospore discharge initiates primary infections. Subsequently, the asexual stage, known as Pseudocercosporella capsellae, produces conidia, which are responsible for secondary cycles of infection and rapid spread during the growing season.

High humidity and moderate temperatures (approximately 15–22°C) are critical for disease development. Rainfall events and prolonged periods of leaf wetness facilitate the germination of spores and penetration of host tissues. Poor crop rotation and high plant density are significant risk factors that exacerbate the severity of white leaf spot outbreaks in agricultural fields.

To effectively mitigate the damage caused by this pathogen, a comprehensive integrated pest management (IPM) approach is required. Management strategies include:

  • Deep burial of crop residues to reduce the initial inoculum source.
  • Implementation of at least a 3-year crop rotation cycle to break the disease cycle.
  • Use of resistant crop varieties adapted to regional conditions.
  • Application of systemic fungicides during the early stages of disease progression to protect the leaf canopy.
