Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Mycosphaerella fragariae is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the Dothideomycetes class. While it has a sexual stage, it is most commonly identified in the field by its asexual stage, known as Ramularia brunnea. It acts as a specialized plant pathogen that exclusively targets strawberry plants, significantly affecting their vigor and overall productivity.
Diseases and affected crops: The fungus causes a disease commonly known as strawberry leaf spot. The infection is characterized by the appearance of small, round, purple-to-red spots on the upper leaf surfaces. Over time, the centers of these lesions turn white or light gray, surrounded by a distinct dark reddish-brown border. In severe cases, the spots can merge, leading to the necrosis of large leaf areas.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and sclerotia on infected plant debris, specifically on old leaves left on the ground. When environmental conditions improve in the spring, conidia are produced and dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or overhead irrigation. The infection process is iterative, meaning multiple cycles of reinfection occur throughout the growing season, provided that moisture remains on the leaf surface.

Poor air circulation in high-density plantings or fields with high weed pressure creates a microclimate conducive to fungal growth. The economic damage stems from reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly translates to smaller fruit size, lower yields, and a weakened plant that is less likely to survive severe winters.

Cultural practices are the first line of defense, focusing on sanitation and moisture management to prevent the pathogen from establishing a stronghold.
