Description
Mycosphaerella leaf spot of pear is a fungal infection caused by the ascomycete Mycosphaerella pyri (anamorph: Septoria pyricola). As a specialized pathogen, it predominantly affects trees within the Pyrus genus, leading to characteristic foliage degradation and physiological stress in affected orchards.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular or angular spots on the leaves. As the lesions develop, the center of the spot turns light brown or white, surrounded by a distinct dark margin. The presence of minute black pycnidia within these spots is diagnostic, as these structures contain the conidia responsible for secondary disease cycles during the growing season.
The pathogen completes its life cycle by overwintering as perithecia on fallen, infected leaves. During the spring, primary infections are initiated by ascospores discharged from these overwintered structures. Once infection is established, the fungus produces conidia, which are splashed by rain and dispersed by wind to healthy foliage, leading to rapid spread throughout the canopy.
High humidity and moderate temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for disease development. Dense canopy structures that limit airflow and trap moisture exacerbate the infection, leading to premature defoliation. This loss of photosynthetic area severely impacts fruit size, quality, and the overall accumulation of carbohydrates for overwintering.
Effective control strategies focus on reducing the primary inoculum source through strict orchard sanitation, including the removal or deep burial of leaf litter. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides during the early leaf development stages and subsequent protective sprays. Maintaining optimal tree spacing and regular pruning are essential for promoting canopy aeration and reducing disease pressure.
