It is a specialized phytopathogenic fungus that specifically targets species of the genus Pyrus. It represents a common fungal threat in commercial and amateur pear orchards globally.

Associated diseases and host range: The pathogen is responsible for the disease known as pear leaf brown spot. The infection presents as numerous small, circular, or angular spots on the foliage. These spots eventually turn dark brown, and characteristic tiny black dots, representing pycnidia and perithecia, become visible on the leaf surface, serving as a primary diagnostic feature.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus overwinters primarily as perithecia within infected fallen leaves. During the spring, as temperatures rise and moisture levels increase, ascospores are released, initiating primary infection on young emerging foliage. Throughout the growing season, the pathogen produces conidia in pycnidia, which spread the infection through rain splash and wind, leading to secondary cycles of disease development.

Conditions for development and economic impact: High humidity, frequent rainfall, and extended periods of leaf wetness are critical for the spore germination and spread of the pathogen. The economic impact is significant; premature defoliation reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, depletes carbohydrate reserves, stunts fruit development, and reduces the tree's overall vigor and winter hardiness.

Control and management measures: Effective control strategies begin with good orchard sanitation, specifically the removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate the primary inoculum source. Cultural practices such as maintaining proper spacing and pruning to promote airflow are essential. Chemical control, including the application of copper-based fungicides in early spring and protective or systemic fungicides during the growing season, is recommended.
