Description

Mycosphaerella stemmatea (anamorph Ramularia grevilleana) is a significant fungal pathogen responsible for common leaf spot disease in strawberries. Classified within the Ascomycota division, this fungus is a widespread parasite that primarily targets the foliage of strawberry plants, reducing their photosynthetic efficiency and overall vigor.

The primary symptoms of infection manifest as small, roundish spots on the leaves. Initially, these spots are reddish or brown, often bordered by a dark purple or black margin. As the pathogen develops, the center of the spots may turn grey or light brown as the fungus produces its conidial structures. Severe infestations result in significant leaf necrosis, causing the foliage to wither prematurely.

The life cycle of Mycosphaerella stemmatea is closely tied to the host's debris. The fungus overwinters as mycelia and stromata within infected, decaying strawberry leaves on the soil surface. With the arrival of spring, rising temperatures and moisture trigger the release of conidia or ascospores, which are spread by wind-borne water droplets and physical contact, initiating primary infections on newly emerged foliage.

Favorable conditions for the development and spread of this disease include high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense plant canopies. The pathogen thrives in moderate temperature ranges, typically between 18°C and 25°C. Excessive nitrogen fertilization can also exacerbate susceptibility, as it promotes lush, succulent growth that is more easily penetrated by the pathogen.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the cycle of infection. Key strategies include meticulous sanitation, such as the removal and destruction of infected foliage after harvest to reduce the inoculum load. Furthermore, maintaining proper plant spacing ensures adequate airflow, reducing leaf wetness duration. Chemical control using preventive fungicides applied during the early vegetative stage and post-bloom is recommended in high-pressure areas.
