Nectria (lat. Nectria) is a genus of ascomycetous fungi comprising several serious plant pathogens responsible for various types of canker, bark necrosis, and shoot dieback in woody plants. Taxonomically, this genus belongs to the Kingdom Fungi, Phylum Ascomycota, and Class Sordariomycetes. These fungi often function as opportunistic pathogens that exploit weaknesses in the host plant's defense system.
The diseases caused by Nectria species are frequently referred to as Nectria canker. This pathogen affects a wide range of hosts, including apple, pear, cherry, and various ornamental trees. The infection is characterized by the presence of small, bright red or orange fungal fruiting bodies erupting through the bark, coupled with sunken, necrotic areas that eventually expand and lead to branch death or tree collapse.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production of both sexual spores (ascospores) and asexual spores (conidia). These spores are dispersed by rain splash, wind, and insects, landing on exposed tissue such as pruning wounds, frost cracks, or leaf scars. Once contact is made, the fungus colonizes the inner bark and cambium layers, causing tissue death and interrupting the transport of nutrients and water.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. High relative humidity, mild temperatures, and poor air circulation within the canopy create ideal conditions for Nectria growth. The pathogen is particularly active during the dormant season, when wet, cool weather facilitates the release and germination of spores, making the timing of preventative measures essential.
Management and control of Nectria infections require an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and tree health:
- Prompt removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce the local spore load.
- Sterilization of pruning tools to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
- Applying wound dressings to major cuts and treating frost-damaged bark with copper-based fungicides.
- Promoting tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and site selection to minimize environmental stress.
