Description
Nectria foliicola is a microscopic ascomycete fungus belonging to the Nectriaceae family. As a plant pathogen, it primarily infects the leaves and shoots of various woody plants. While it can exist as a saprotroph on dead plant material, it frequently acts as a parasite that exploits weakened or stressed plant tissues, causing localized tissue death and interrupting the plant's normal metabolic processes.
The primary symptom of the infection caused by this fungus is the development of necrotic lesions on leaves and young stems. As the infection progresses, small, characteristic bright red or orange perithecia (fruiting bodies) become visible on the affected surfaces. These structures are the hallmark of the genus Nectria and serve as the main source of inoculum for further spread during the growing season, potentially leading to premature leaf drop and reduced plant vigor.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by seasonal climate changes. It reproduces via conidia during the spring and summer months, which are disseminated by wind, splashing rain, or insect vectors. Survival throughout the winter occurs within infected leaf litter, bark fissures, or woody debris. As soon as temperatures rise and moisture becomes available in the spring, the fungal mycelium reactivates, initiating the cycle of infection once again.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization of plant tissues. Poorly ventilated areas, such as overly dense plantings, significantly exacerbate the risk of infection by keeping the foliage wet for longer periods, thereby facilitating the penetration of the fungus into the plant tissues.
Management and control strategies include:
- Sanitary maintenance, specifically the removal and destruction of fallen leaves and infected plant parts.
- Pruning to improve canopy airflow, which reduces the moisture trapped around the foliage.
- Application of protective fungicides during periods of high disease pressure to prevent initial colonization.
- Maintaining plant health through proper fertilization and watering to improve the host's natural resistance to fungal pathogens.
