Nectria mauritiicola

Nectria mauritiicola

Description

Nectria mauritiicola is a species of fungus within the Nectriaceae family. Classified as a plant pathogen, it acts primarily as an opportunistic invader, targeting weakened or damaged tissues in woody plants. This fungus is known for its ability to compromise the structural integrity of branches and stems, leading to localized necrosis.

The disease caused by this pathogen manifests through the development of lesions and cankers on the bark, often resulting in the dieback of shoots. While it can exist as a saprotroph on decaying matter, it transitions to a pathogenic state when it encounters favorable conditions, such as fresh wounds on host plants or decreased vitality in the host due to stress.

The life cycle involves the production of perithecia, which act as fruiting bodies containing spores. These spores are dispersed by environmental factors including wind, rain splashes, and sometimes insect vectors. Once they land on a suitable site, the spores germinate, and the mycelium begins to colonize the host's cortex, eventually disrupting the vascular system.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on humidity and temperature. High humidity levels combined with temperatures between 15°C and 22°C create an ideal environment for the fungus to thrive. Poor orchard hygiene, such as leaving pruning debris in the field or failing to seal pruning cuts, significantly increases the risk of successful infection.

  • Perform regular pruning of infected plant parts.
  • Seal larger pruning cuts with appropriate wound dressings.
  • Maintain tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation.
  • Improve air circulation within the canopy to reduce moisture.
  • Remove and destroy all symptomatic plant material to reduce inoculum.

The economic impact of Nectria mauritiicola stems from the progressive weakening of host plants, which leads to reduced yields and potential loss of entire branches. Effective management relies on a combination of cultural practices, such as sanitation and proper pruning techniques, which limit the ability of the fungus to establish itself in the plant tissues.
