Description

Nectria rigidiuscula is an ascomycete fungus within the Nectriaceae family, recognized as a significant phytopathogen. Its anamorph stage, commonly known as Fusarium decemcellulare, is frequently the form encountered during active infection processes. This pathogen primarily affects the bark and vascular tissues of woody plants, causing localized necrosis and cankerous lesions.

The host range of Nectria rigidiuscula is quite broad, with its most economically devastating impact observed in cocoa trees (cacao). Additionally, it is known to infect rubber trees, citrus, and various other tropical woody species. The infection usually manifests as sunken lesions on the branches or stems, which can eventually girdle the plant and interrupt nutrient flow, leading to dieback.

The lifecycle of the fungus is characterized by its ability to persist in dead tissues and infect healthy parts of the plant through wounds. These wounds can be caused by pruning, insect feeding, or environmental factors. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the cortex and cambium, spreading through the production of conidia, which are easily disseminated by wind-blown rain and contaminated tools.

Favorable conditions for the development of this pathogen include warm, humid environments that prevent the rapid drying of plant wounds. Dense canopy covers that reduce light penetration and ventilation significantly increase the risk of infection. Plants already suffering from nutrient deficiencies or other stressors are notably more susceptible to colonization by Nectria rigidiuscula.

Management of this disease requires an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and host vigor. To effectively control the spread, growers should consider the following:

  • Regular pruning of dead or diseased wood to remove inoculum sources.
  • Sanitizing all pruning equipment with approved disinfectants to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Applying wound dressings to prevent pathogen entry after mechanical damage.
  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce insect vectors that may spread spores.
