As a serious plant pathogen, it is recognized as a primary causative agent of botryosphaeria dieback. It typically manifests as a systemic infection that colonizes the vascular tissues of woody plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions.

The host range of this pathogen includes a variety of economically significant crops such as grapevines, stone fruits (peaches, plums), pome fruits, and nut-bearing trees. The symptoms caused by this fungus include cortical necrosis, branch dieback, fruit rot, and the formation of deep cankers. If left unchecked, the infection disrupts nutrient and water transport, eventually killing the host.

The biology of Neofusicoccum australe is characterized by the production of pycnidia, which serve as reservoirs for conidia. These spores are dispersed by splashing rain, irrigation water, and wind. The fungus often remains asymptomatic for extended periods, making early detection extremely difficult.
