It is recognized as a significant agent causing wood-associated diseases in various woody plants. The pathogen is particularly noted for its role in the complex of diseases causing grapevine dieback, significantly impacting viticulture globally.

The primary host for this fungus is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The infection leads to necrosis of the wood tissue, which causes the collapse of the plant's vascular system. Common symptoms include uneven growth, stunted shoots, necrotic lesions visible in the cross-section of the cordons or trunks, and eventually, the death of individual arms or the entire vine.

The biological life cycle of Neofusicoccum viticlavatum involves the production of pycnidia, which are small fruiting bodies containing conidia. These spores are released during rainfall or high humidity and are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and human activities. Pruning operations are a critical pathway for infection, as the spores easily colonize fresh wounds on the vine wood.

Development and spread of this pathogen are favored by environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. The fungus acts as an opportunist, thriving when the host plant is stressed or when pruning practices create entry points. Because it can survive as an endophyte, it often remains undetected within the vine tissues until the disease progresses to a stage where structural damage is irreversible.
