Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the family Botryosphaeriaceae (order Botryosphaeriales, class Dothideomycetes). It is recognized as a significant agent responsible for grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs). As an ascomycete fungus, it often behaves as an endophyte, colonizing plant tissues without immediate symptoms until environmental or host-related stress triggers disease development.
The primary host for Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme is the grapevine. The infection leads to wood necrosis, vascular tissue decay, and can eventually cause the total collapse of the plant, often referred to as sudden vine death. By obstructing the plant's vascular pathways, the fungus severely reduces the vine's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to decreased yields and long-term decline of the vineyard.
The life cycle of the pathogen is characterized by both sexual and asexual spore production. Conidia are dispersed primarily by rain splash and wind, entering the vine through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or mechanical injuries. Once the fungus enters the woody tissue, the mycelium spreads systemically, causing internal browning and rotting that can persist for years within the host.
Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Favorable weather facilitates the release and germination of spores, especially following rainfall events. Stress factors such as water deficit, poor soil conditions, and improper pruning practices significantly increase the host's susceptibility to colonization and the subsequent manifestation of disease symptoms.
