Neoscytalidium is a genus of ascomycetous fungi recognized as a significant group of phytopathogens that primarily cause wood decay, canker, and branch dieback in various woody plants. Classified within the order Botryosphaeriales, these fungi act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the structural and physiological integrity of their hosts, often leading to significant economic losses in fruit and ornamental orchards.

The most common and destructive species within this genus is Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. This fungus has a wide host range, including almonds, citrus, grapevines, and various tropical plants. The infection manifests as necrotic lesions on branches and trunks, bark cracking, and in some cases, the production of exudate or gummosis, eventually leading to systemic decline and death of the infected plant tissue.

The biology and lifecycle of Neoscytalidium are driven by the production of asexual spores known as conidia. These spores are easily disseminated via wind, rainfall, irrigation water, and contaminated pruning tools. Once spores contact a susceptible surface, such as a fresh pruning wound or a bark fissure, they germinate and penetrate the host tissue, establishing a mycelial network that degrades the xylem and phloem.

Pathogen development is strongly influenced by environmental factors, particularly high temperatures and fluctuating humidity levels. Neoscytalidium is known to thrive in hot climates, where it can rapidly colonize stressed or weakened trees. The fungus can persist in dormant wood during unfavorable conditions, ensuring it remains an endemic source of inoculum within the field or orchard environment.

Management and control strategies are essential to minimize the spread of the disease and include the following practices:

  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal and disposal of infected limbs to reduce fungal inoculum.
  • Sanitizing all pruning equipment with disinfectant solutions between each tree to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying protective fungicides or pruning paints to fresh cuts to create a barrier against spore entry.
  • Promoting optimal tree vigor through balanced irrigation and nutrient management to increase host resistance to infection.
