Oculimacula yallundae

Oculimacula yallundae

Description

Systematic position and nature: Oculimacula yallundae is an ascomycete fungus classified within the Helotiales order. It is a major causal agent of eyespot disease in cereals. Unlike some other pathogens, this fungus primarily targets the stem base of plants, making it a critical threat to grain production in temperate climates worldwide.

Host crops and diseases: The pathogen primarily infects winter wheat, winter barley, and rye. It causes the disease known as "eyespot" or "strawbreaker foot rot." Symptoms appear as elliptical lesions with dark margins on the leaf sheaths, eventually penetrating the stem and causing internal discoloration, which weakens the stalk's structural integrity.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus survives between seasons as mycelium on crop debris in the soil. Infection occurs via spores (conidia) spread by rain splash onto young plants. Once infected, the fungus slowly grows through the leaf sheaths into the stem base during the cooler months, causing damage that typically peaks during the tillering and jointing stages.

Conditions for development: Oculimacula yallundae thrives in cool, humid conditions, with optimal development occurring at temperatures between 5°C and 15°C. High rainfall during late autumn and early spring significantly promotes spore production and dispersal. Dense crop canopies and early sowing dates further exacerbate the risk of infection.

Harmfulness and control measures: The economic impact is severe due to lodging, which complicates harvesting and significantly reduces grain quality and yield. Control is achieved through an integrated strategy:

  • Strict crop rotation, avoiding short cycles of susceptible cereals.
  • Proper tillage to accelerate the breakdown of infested stubble.
  • Utilization of resistant cultivars and delayed sowing to reduce early autumn infection.
  • Targeted fungicide application at the beginning of the tillering stage when infection thresholds are reached.
