As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant to obtain nutrients through specialized structures known as haustoria, which penetrate the plant cell walls without killing the cell immediately.
The disease manifests as a characteristic white or grayish powdery coating on the surface of the leaves. This coating represents the extensive development of mycelium and conidia (spores) of the fungus. Infection typically starts on the lower, older leaves and spreads upward throughout the canopy, potentially affecting petioles and bracts if environmental conditions remain favorable for the pathogen.
The biology of Oidiopsis gossypii revolves around the production of conidia that are easily dispersed by wind currents. The fungus thrives in moderate temperatures and high humidity, which facilitate spore germination and colonization of the host tissue. During off-seasons, the pathogen survives in plant debris or on alternative weed hosts, acting as a primary source of inoculum for the next planting season.
