Root olpidiaster (Olpidiaster radicis) is a specialized plant pathogen classified within the division Chytridiomycota. As an obligate endoparasite, this fungus resides primarily within the root tissues of host plants. It is known for its primitive cellular structure and its reliance on aquatic environments within the soil to complete its lifecycle and spread to new hosts.

The infection caused by Olpidiaster radicis primarily targets the roots, often leading to reduced nutrient uptake and water transport efficiency. Symptoms in aerial plant parts include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, which often mimic other nutrient deficiency syndromes. Because the damage is localized underground, the presence of the pathogen is often identified only after significant damage has already occurred.

The biology of this pathogen is highly dependent on moisture. In the presence of water, the organism releases motile zoospores equipped with flagella, which swim through the soil pores to infect adjacent roots. Once inside the root cells, the fungus replicates, eventually forming resting spores. These spores are highly resistant to environmental stress, allowing the pathogen to persist in the soil for several growing seasons even in the absence of a host.

Development and spread are largely driven by environmental factors, particularly overwatering and poor soil drainage. The pathogen can be easily transported across fields or greenhouses via contaminated irrigation water, farming equipment, or infected plant debris. High-density planting in greenhouses creates an ideal microclimate for the rapid multiplication of zoospores and secondary infection cycles.

Management of this pathogen requires a multi-faceted approach emphasizing sanitation and cultural practices. Growers should focus on improving soil aeration and drainage to reduce the motility of zoospores. In greenhouse settings, soil sterilization and the use of disease-free propagation media are critical. Biological control agents that compete with soil-borne pathogens can also be effective in reducing the pressure of Olpidiaster radicis in the root zone.
