Description
Onion yellows is a systemic plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized wall-less bacteria that inhabit the phloem tissue of host plants. These pathogens interfere with the plant's vascular system, severely disrupting the transport of nutrients and causing systemic symptoms throughout the entire onion or garlic plant.
The disease affects various members of the Amaryllidaceae family. The most prominent symptoms include severe chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves, stunted plant height, twisting of the foliage, and the development of small, poorly formed bulbs that are unsuitable for market. In severe cases, the plant may die prematurely before harvest.
The life cycle of the pathogen relies on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers. The transmission process is circulative; the insect acquires the phytoplasma while feeding on an infected plant, undergoes a latency period within the vector, and then transmits the pathogen to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of onion yellows include warm, dry weather, which accelerates leafhopper activity and movement between fields. The presence of reservoir hosts, such as various perennial weeds that harbor the phytoplasma during winter, is a critical factor in the annual recurrence of the disease.
Management of onion yellows focuses on minimizing the contact between insect vectors and the crop. Control strategies include rigorous weed management to eliminate alternative hosts, the use of systemic insecticides to manage leafhopper populations, and the selection of high-quality, disease-free planting material to prevent initial outbreaks in the field.
