Description

Azalea flower blight is caused by the fungus Ovulinia azalea, a specialized pathogen within the kingdom Fungi and the family Sclerotiniaceae. This organism is highly host-specific, primarily targeting members of the genus Rhododendron, including evergreen and deciduous azaleas.

The disease manifests as small, water-soaked spots on the petals. These spots enlarge rapidly, eventually causing the entire blossom to collapse into a soft, mushy, and slimy mass. Affected flowers typically remain attached to the plant for a short time before falling, leaving the host unsightly and stripped of its ornamental value during the peak bloom season.

The life cycle of Ovulinia azalea is intricately linked to the plant's flowering period. The fungus overwinters as sclerotia in the soil or within the decayed remnants of previous years' flowers. In spring, as temperatures rise, these sclerotia produce apothecia, which release airborne ascospores that infect new, opening flower buds.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the spread of the pathogen. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures between 15°C and 20°C create an optimal environment for spore germination and rapid infection. During such weather, the pathogen can quickly cause a widespread outbreak, moving efficiently from flower to flower via wind or rain splash.

Effective management of azalea flower blight requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing and destroying fallen flowers and applying a layer of fresh mulch to cover the soil, are essential to break the infection cycle. Chemical control is also necessary; prophylactic applications of fungicides during the early bud stage are crucial to prevent the initial infection from becoming established in the garden.
