Oxyporus latemarginatus

Oxyporus latemarginatus

Description

Oxyporus latemarginatus is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the genus Oxyporus. As a serious phytopathogen, it is classified as a wood-decay fungus that thrives as both a parasite on living trees and a saprotroph on deadwood. Its primary ecological role in the context of plant pathology is the colonization of woody tissues, leading to structural instability and necrosis of the host plant.

The fungus is a primary agent of white rot disease, affecting various deciduous trees, including fruit species like apple and plum, as well as native forest trees. The pathogen targets the structural components of wood, such as lignin and cellulose. As the infection progresses, the inner tissue of the trunk and roots loses its strength, which often leads to branch breakage or the eventual decline and death of the entire tree.

The biological life cycle of Oxyporus latemarginatus involves the production of annual or perennial resupinate sporocarps, often characterized by a creamy color and a distinct white margin. Basidiospores serve as the primary inoculum, spreading through wind or water splashes to colonize susceptible areas. Upon landing on a fresh wound, the spores germinate, and the mycelium penetrates deep into the sapwood and heartwood to establish the infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the distribution and development of the pathogen. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for mycelial expansion. Lack of proper sanitation in orchards, such as leaving pruning debris or neglecting frost-damaged limbs, significantly increases the risk of the fungus establishing a presence within a plantation or forest stand.

Managing this pathogen requires a rigorous approach to forest and orchard sanitation to prevent further spread:

  • pruning infected branches at least 15-20 cm below the visible decay;
  • sterilizing all tools between cuts to prevent cross-contamination;
  • treating bark injuries and pruning wounds with protective sealants;
  • maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate water management.
