Papaya droopy virus (PdV) is a significant plant pathogen affecting papaya (Carica papaya) crops globally. Taxonomically, it is classified within the genus Potexvirus. The virus is characterized by flexuous, filamentous particles containing single-stranded RNA. As a systemic virus, it spreads throughout the plant's vascular system, causing severe physiological disruptions that ultimately lead to crop loss.

The primary symptom of infection is the distinctive drooping of the leaves, accompanied by chlorosis, leaf distortion, and stunted growth. Infected plants typically exhibit reduced vigor and diminished photosynthetic capacity. Fruit set is often severely impaired, and fruits that do develop are frequently malformed or of poor commercial quality, leading to substantial economic losses for papaya growers.

The biology and transmission cycle of PdV are primarily driven by mechanical contact and, in some contexts, potential vector-mediated spread. The virus enters the plant through wounds or injuries to the leaf or stem tissue. Once introduced, it replicates within the host cells and moves systemically via the phloem, eventually invading all plant organs, which makes the infection incurable once established.
