Description
Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is a severe plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the family Potyviridae. This single-stranded RNA virus is recognized as a major limiting factor in papaya production worldwide, often causing total yield loss if management strategies are not implemented early in the season.
The host range of PRSV is primarily limited to papaya and members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, squashes, and melons. Infected plants exhibit distinct clinical symptoms including mosaic patterns on leaves, characteristic ringspots on fruits, and severe stunted growth, which severely reduces the marketability and quality of the harvest.
The biological cycle of the virus is driven by its aphid vectors. PRSV is transmitted in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner, meaning that aphids can acquire and transmit the virus within seconds of probing an infected plant. The virus does not persist within the aphid vector for long, but its efficiency is high due to the mobility of the aphids.
Environmental conditions that favor the rapid spread of the virus include warm climates where aphid populations thrive and migrate between crops. The presence of secondary hosts, particularly perennial or wild cucurbits, acts as a primary source of inoculum that maintains the virus in an area throughout the year, facilitating infection of newly planted crops.
Control of PRSV relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include the development and cultivation of transgenic resistant papaya varieties, the removal of infected plants to reduce primary inoculum, and the use of physical barriers or reflective mulches to deter aphid vectors. Furthermore, maintaining weed-free borders around fields is critical to minimize local reservoirs of the virus.
