Mild Pepper Mosaic Virus (PMMoV) is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Tobamovirus. As a member of this genus, it is known for its remarkable stability in the environment and its ability to infect various plants of the Solanaceae family, primarily pepper (Capsicum annuum) species.

The disease primarily manifests as mild mosaic symptoms on the leaves, including light green and yellow chlorotic mottling. Unlike other aggressive Tobamoviruses, the symptoms of this specific virus can be subtle, often resulting in plants that appear stunted but are not immediately identified as diseased, which leads to silent spread throughout the crop.

The biology of the virus involves transmission through mechanical contact. It spreads through handling infected plants, pruning, harvesting, and even through contaminated soil or tools. Unlike many other plant viruses, it is not typically transmitted by aphids or whiteflies; instead, it relies heavily on human intervention and seed-borne transmission to move between locations.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this virus include moderate temperatures and high-density planting. Because the virus can survive for long periods on greenhouse structures, plastic surfaces, and plant debris, it is considered a persistent threat that is difficult to eradicate once it becomes established in a closed cultivation system.

Economic damage is caused by reduced yield, uneven fruit development, and decreased marketability of the produce. Management strategies must prioritize strict hygiene protocols, such as sanitizing tools between plants and using certified, virus-free seeds.
