Paratrichodorus

Paratrichodorus

Description

Taxonomy and pathogen type: Paratrichodorus is a genus of migratory ectoparasitic nematodes within the family Trichodoridae. In agricultural science, they are recognized as significant plant pathogens known colloquially as stubby-root nematodes, which inflict damage by feeding on the outer cells of plant roots using their unique, arch-shaped onchiostyle.

Diseases and host crops: These nematodes have a broad host range, impacting essential crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, vegetables, and ornamentals. Their most critical role in agriculture is that of a virus vector; they are capable of transmitting the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV), which leads to severe conditions like "spraing" or corky ringspot in potato tubers.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Paratrichodorus is completed entirely within the soil profile. Females deposit eggs near the roots of host plants. The larvae and adults remain mobile in the soil moisture film, using their stylets to puncture epidermal cells. They do not enter the root tissue but cause damage that forces the root to stop elongation, resulting in a stunted or "stubby" appearance.

Conditions and pathogenicity: They thrive in sandy and light-textured soils where moisture is readily available, allowing for ease of movement. The damage they cause is twofold: the mechanical injury to the root system restricts nutrient and water uptake, while the viral transmission leads to systemic infections that significantly reduce yield quality and quantity, often resulting in unmarketable produce.

Control and management measures: Managing populations of Paratrichodorus requires a strategic approach focused on prevention and population reduction:

  • Utilizing crop rotation with non-host or trap crops to break the life cycle.
  • Eliminating host weeds that act as reservoirs for the viruses they transmit.
  • Ensuring the use of certified, virus-free seed tubers and nursery stock.
  • Applying chemical nematicides or soil fumigants where populations exceed established economic thresholds.
  • Improving soil structure through organic amendments to create unfavorable conditions for nematode movement.
