Passiflora latent virus (PLV) is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Potexvirus of the Alphaflexiviridae family. It is a single-stranded RNA virus known for its ability to infect hosts while often remaining asymptomatic. This latent phase allows the pathogen to persist in agricultural settings without immediate detection, complicating efforts to manage plant health in commercial production.

The virus primarily targets species within the Passiflora genus, with Passiflora edulis (passion fruit) being the most economically affected crop. As an obligate parasite, the virus replicates within the host's cells, effectively hijacking cellular machinery to produce viral proteins. This metabolic redirection results in a weakened host plant that is more susceptible to secondary environmental stresses.

The biological cycle of this virus is dominated by mechanical transmission. In field and greenhouse conditions, human activity is the primary vector. The virus particles are highly stable and can easily adhere to pruning shears, grafting knives, and even clothing or hands. Because there are no curative treatments available to eliminate viral infection in plants, management focuses strictly on exclusion and sanitation protocols to prevent the introduction and spread of the pathogen.
