Description
Passionfruit woodiness is a serious plant disease caused by the Passionfruit woodiness virus (PWV), which is a member of the genus Potyvirus. It is considered one of the most economically damaging pathogens affecting commercial passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) production globally, significantly reducing crop yield and quality.
The disease is characterized by distinct morphological changes in the host plant. On the fruit, the pericarp becomes thickened and hard, leading to the name 'woodiness,' while the fruit itself remains small and deformed. Foliar symptoms include mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, and curling of the leaves, which hinder the photosynthetic capacity of the vines.
The biological cycle of PWV is closely linked to its transmission through insect vectors, primarily aphids such as Myzus persicae. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner, meaning aphids can acquire the virus after a brief feed on an infected plant and immediately transfer it to healthy plants. This mechanism makes the virus spread rapidly within an orchard.
Environmental conditions that favor high populations of aphid vectors are critical for the spread of the disease. Warm weather patterns and the presence of reservoir hosts, such as wild Passiflora species or infected weeds surrounding the planting site, significantly increase the risk of infection. PWV persists throughout the year in these alternative hosts.
Management strategies focus on preventing the spread of the virus, as no chemical treatment can cure an infected plant. Key measures include:
- Sourcing certified virus-free seedlings for new plantations.
- Rigorous monitoring and management of aphid populations using targeted insecticides.
- Prompt roguing and destruction of infected vines to eliminate the source of the virus.
- Maintaining field hygiene by clearing weeds that may act as virus reservoirs.
- Establishing spatial isolation from older or symptomatic passion fruit orchards.
