Peach mosaic

Peach mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Peach mosaic virus (PMV), which is a member of the genus Ilarvirus. This pathogen is a significant threat to various stone fruit species within the Rosaceae family, particularly peach, nectarine, apricot, and almond trees. The virus causes systemic infection, meaning it spreads throughout the entire tree, leading to long-term health decline.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse and often become most visible in early spring. These include chlorotic mosaic patterns, mottling of leaves, and yellow leaf veining. In many cases, trees exhibit leaf crinkling, reduced internode length leading to a bushy growth habit, and distinct malformation of flowers and fruits. The fruit surface frequently appears bumpy, and the overall yield is significantly reduced.

The biology of the virus involves a specialized vector: the eriophyid mite Eriophyes insidiosus. These microscopic pests transmit the virus while feeding on plant tissues. Aside from mite transmission, the virus is easily propagated via human activities, specifically through the use of infected scions or rootstocks during the grafting process, which is a common source of regional outbreaks.

The spread of Peach mosaic is highly dependent on the population density of the mite vector and the movement of nursery stock. The virus survives within the living tissues of the host throughout the year. Once a tree is infected, it remains a reservoir for the virus, making it a permanent source of inoculum for neighboring trees in the orchard.

Effective management and control strategies are strictly preventive, as there is no chemical cure for infected plants. Growers must prioritize the purchase of virus-free, certified stock from reputable nurseries. If an infection is detected, the affected tree must be promptly removed and destroyed to prevent the spread of the virus to healthy plants. Additionally, controlling the mite population with appropriate miticides is critical during the growing season.
