Description
Peanut stripe virus (PStV) is a destructive plant pathogen classified within the Potyvirus genus of the Potyviridae family. It is a viral agent responsible for systemic infection in various legumes, significantly impacting crop quality and total yield in agricultural regions where peanut cultivation is prevalent.
The primary host of the virus is the peanut plant (Arachis hypogaea). However, the host range is broad, encompassing several other economically important legumes such as soybean (Glycine max) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The virus is notorious for its ability to persist in diverse environments through its host range.
The biological cycle of PStV is primarily driven by non-persistent transmission by various species of aphids. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant, it acquires the virus in its stylet and can transmit it to healthy plants within seconds. Furthermore, seed-borne transmission is a critical factor, as infected seeds can carry the virus over long distances and initiate new outbreaks in previously unaffected fields.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on the population dynamics of aphid vectors. Warm temperatures generally accelerate the life cycle of these vectors, leading to rapid disease dispersion. Additionally, the presence of asymptomatic weed hosts can maintain the viral load in the field environment throughout the growing season.
Managing Peanut stripe virus requires a multi-faceted approach. Effective strategies include:
- sourcing virus-free, certified seeds for planting;
- implementing strict weed management to eliminate alternative hosts;
- using systemic or contact insecticides to control aphid vectors during the vulnerable growth stages;
- maintaining quarantine regulations to prevent the movement of contaminated seed lots into new production areas.
