Pellicularia koleroga
Pellicularia koleroga
Description
Pellicularia koleroga is a pathogenic basidiomycete fungus responsible for the disease commonly known as "American leaf spot." Primarily affecting coffee trees (Coffea spp.), this fungus is a significant threat in tropical and subtropical regions. It belongs to the Cantharellales order and is characterized by its ability to spread rapidly across plant tissues during periods of high precipitation.
The disease symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked spots that rapidly expand, turning into dark brown or black necrotic lesions. A distinguishing feature of Pellicularia koleroga is the formation of a delicate, cobweb-like layer of white mycelium on the underside of leaves and along the petioles. If left unchecked, this fungal growth causes extensive premature defoliation and the dieback of fruit-bearing branches.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by moisture availability. The fungus produces basidiospores that are disseminated by wind or rain splashes. Under favorable conditions, these spores germinate and colonize the leaf surface, creating a dense network of mycelium. In the absence of host plants, the fungus survives in the form of dormant mycelial mats on infected debris or twigs, remaining ready to reinfect new foliage when humidity levels rise.
Environmental conditions are paramount to the spread of this pathogen. Pellicularia koleroga thrives in temperatures between 20°C and 25°C and relative humidity levels exceeding 80%. High-density plantings and dense shade covers exacerbate the problem by reducing airflow and preventing foliage from drying out, which facilitates spore germination and mycelial growth.
Effective management strategies for Pellicularia koleroga involve a combination of cultural practices and chemical control. Key measures include:
- Implementing regular pruning to improve canopy ventilation.
- Maintaining proper spacing between plants to reduce humidity.
- Sanitation by removing and destroying heavily infected plant parts.
- Applying copper-based fungicides or appropriate systemic chemicals during the early stages of the rainy season.
