Peltella is a genus of fungi within the class Dothideomycetes, recognized as a group of plant pathogens. These fungi typically colonize the surface of leaves and stems, primarily affecting a variety of plants in tropical and subtropical environments. While often localized in their impact, they can establish significant presence on specific ornamental and fruit-bearing species under favorable conditions.
The primary symptoms associated with Peltella infections include necrotic spots, leaf discolouration, and the development of small, often dark-colored ascomata on the foliage. As the infection progresses, it inhibits photosynthetic capacity. This damage causes physiological stress to the plant, potentially leading to premature senescence, reduced vigour, and a decline in overall crop quality and yield.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production and dispersal of ascospores. These spores are disseminated primarily through wind and splash irrigation, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across a plant canopy. Once a spore settles on a suitable host surface, it germinates and forms a mycelial network that exploits the plant's surface tissues to sustain its growth and reproduction.
Optimal conditions for the development of Peltella include high relative humidity, frequent rain, and moderate to warm temperatures. These environmental triggers stimulate sporulation and germination. Poor air circulation within dense canopy structures exacerbates the spread, creating a microclimate that allows the pathogen to thrive and establish persistent populations during the wet season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to disease control. Key strategies include improving plant spacing and pruning to enhance airflow, which reduces humidity around the foliage. Additionally, sanitation—removing and destroying infected plant debris—is crucial to minimize inoculum sources. In severe cases, the application of protective fungicides can prevent further spread and protect new growth from secondary infections.
