This is a typical mold fungus, classified as an imperfect fungus, which reproduces primarily through asexual means. In an agronomic context, Penicillium species are known as facultative saprotrophs capable of transitioning to a parasitic lifestyle if plant resistance is compromised or storage conditions are inadequate.

Diseases and host crops: The primary manifestation of pathogenicity includes seed molding, fruit rots, and decay of bulbs or root vegetables. The fungus affects almost all agricultural crops, especially during post-harvest storage: cereals, potatoes, sugar beets, tomatoes, citrus, and apples. The disease is characterized by a distinct blue-green or grayish powdery coating that spreads rapidly across the surface, causing tissue softening and decay.

Biology and life cycle: The mycelium consists of branched hyphae forming dense mats. Reproduction occurs via conidia — specialized spores formed on branched conidiophores that resemble brushes or brooms. Spore dispersal is facilitated by air currents, water splashes, or contaminated agricultural equipment. During its life cycle, the fungus can persist for long periods in the soil or on plant debris as mycelium or dormant spores.

Conditions for development and harmfulness: Optimal conditions for Penicillium development include high air humidity (above 80%) and moderate temperatures (from +15°C to +25°C), although many species can remain active at lower temperatures in cold storage facilities. The economic impact involves not only the mechanical destruction of plant tissues but also the accumulation of mycotoxins, which render the produce unsafe for human consumption or animal feed.

Protection and control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Key strategies include:

  • Maintaining strict temperature and humidity control in storage facilities.
  • Thorough cleaning and disinfection of storages and shipping containers before stocking.
  • Seed treatment with fungicides to prevent seed-borne mold infection.
  • Adhering to crop rotation practices and removing infected plant residues.
  • Selecting crop varieties resistant to mechanical damage during harvesting.
