Peniophora sacrata is a species of crust fungus within the family Peniophoraceae, order Russulales, and phylum Basidiomycota. This fungus is recognized in forest pathology as an agent of wood decay, capable of degrading lignocellulosic components of tree trunks and branches. It primarily impacts broad-leaved species in forested areas and ornamental plantations.

The fungus acts as a pathogen by colonizing the woody tissues of trees. It typically enters through wounds, broken branches, or frost cracks, where the protective bark layer has been breached. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the xylem, decomposing the wood matrix and causing white or brown rot, which compromises the integrity and lifespan of the host tree.

The biological cycle of Peniophora sacrata is characterized by the production of resupinate (crust-like) basidiocarps on the bark or wood surface. These reproductive structures release microscopic basidiospores that are dispersed by wind and rain. These spores act as primary inoculum, searching for new susceptible surfaces to initiate the cycle of colonization and wood degradation.

Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of this fungus include high relative humidity, poor air circulation within canopy layers, and moderate temperatures. It thrives in locations where necrotic woody material is allowed to accumulate, providing a reservoir for infection. Neglected landscapes with high density of weakened trees are particularly susceptible to rapid infestation.
