Pennisetum mosaic is a viral plant disease caused by the Pennisetum mosaic virus (PenMV). This pathogen belongs to the Potyviridae family and the Potyvirus genus. It primarily infects monocotyledonous plants, focusing on various species of the Pennisetum genus and other related grasses within the Poaceae family, posing a significant risk to forage and ornamental production.

The disease manifests through clear symptomatic patterns on leaves, characterized by mosaic-like chlorotic mottling, striping, or light-green spots. As the infection progresses, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced biomass, and, in severe cases, necrotic streaking. The physiological disruption caused by the virus limits the plant's ability to undergo efficient photosynthesis, thereby reducing overall yield and vigor.

The biology of the Pennisetum mosaic virus is heavily reliant on non-persistent transmission. Aphids (Aphididae) serve as the primary vectors, acquiring the virus during brief feeding sessions on infected plants and transmitting it to healthy ones almost immediately. The virus particles are held in the aphid's stylets, which facilitates rapid spread across a field even with low populations of the insect vector.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid population explosions directly correlate with higher infection rates. Warm, stable climates encourage vector mobility and feeding activity. Furthermore, the persistence of the virus in perennial grass weeds acts as a reservoir during the off-season, allowing the cycle of infection to restart as soon as susceptible crops are planted or begin their spring growth phase.

Control strategies for Pennisetum mosaic are focused on minimizing the exposure of crops to vectors and reservoirs. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for maintaining healthy crops:
