Pepper huasteco virus

Pepper huasteco virus (PHV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. As a DNA-based virus, it primarily affects Solanaceous crops, causing significant economic losses in tropical and subtropical regions, with high prevalence in Mexico.

The primary hosts for this virus are bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) and tomatoes. The infection is characterized by severe symptoms including leaf mosaic, upward leaf curling, stunting of the plant, and significant deformity of shoots. These symptoms lead to reduced fruit development and a substantial decline in both yield quantity and quality.

The biological cycle of the virus is strictly dependent on its insect vector, the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner; the whitefly acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant and retains it for the remainder of its life, effectively inoculating healthy plants during subsequent feeding events.

Environmental conditions such as high temperatures and arid climates favor the rapid multiplication of whitefly populations, which directly correlates with the severity of PHV outbreaks. In intensive agricultural settings, the combination of high plant density and the presence of alternative weed hosts allows the virus to persist and spread rapidly throughout the season.

Management of the virus relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes the use of resistant crop varieties, thorough weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs, and strict population management of the whitefly vector. In greenhouse production, the use of insect-proof screens and systematic insecticide rotations are critical to preventing disease establishment.
