Description

Pepper veinal mottle virus (PVMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus within the Potyviridae family. It is a widespread virus that causes severe economic losses in vegetable production, particularly affecting various members of the Solanaceae family across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions.

The primary hosts of PVMV include sweet peppers, chili peppers, tomatoes, and tobacco. The infection typically manifests through vein clearing on younger leaves, mosaic patterns, stunted plant growth, and severe distortion of foliage. In highly susceptible cultivars, the disease can significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to poor vegetative development.

The biological transmission of PVMV is primarily vector-borne, involving several species of aphids (e.g., Myzus persicae). The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner, meaning aphids can acquire the virus after brief probing of an infected plant and immediately transmit it to healthy hosts. The virus does not replicate within the vector, but its rapid transmission makes it highly destructive.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid proliferation—such as mild temperatures and sufficient moisture—directly correlate with increased PVMV spread. The virus persists in various weed reservoirs, specifically wild solanaceous plants, which serve as an inoculum source throughout the growing season and between consecutive cropping cycles.

The economic impact of PVMV is manifested through reduced fruit yield and downgraded quality, as infected plants often produce small, deformed, and unmarketable fruits. Management strategies must be preventative, as there is no chemical cure for viral plant diseases:

  • Selecting virus-resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
  • Implementing rigorous aphid control programs using suitable insecticides or physical barriers.
  • Maintaining field hygiene by eradicating reservoir weed hosts around the perimeter.
  • Removing and destroying infected plants to reduce primary inoculum sources.
  • Employing spatial or temporal separation from older, infected plantings.
