Peronosclerospora miscanthi is a destructive oomycete pathogen responsible for causing brown stripe downy mildew on maize and various Miscanthus species. It belongs to the kingdom Chromista, phylum Oomycota. Unlike true fungi, this organism is an obligate parasite that requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle and thrive within the agricultural ecosystem.
The disease is characterized by systemic infection symptoms, including the appearance of light-colored chlorotic stripes on leaves which eventually turn tan or brown. In severe cases, the infected plants exhibit stunted growth, profuse tillering, and the failure of ears to develop fully. Under high humidity, a diagnostic fuzzy growth of sporangia appears on the undersides of the leaves.
The life cycle of this pathogen involves both asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual sporangia are produced under high humidity and are dispersed by wind and rain, enabling rapid secondary spread throughout a field. Consequently, years with high rainfall and frequent morning mists are often associated with outbreaks, as these conditions facilitate the movement of spores to susceptible maize tissues.

Control strategies are primarily focused on preventative measures rather than curative ones.
