It often functions as an opportunistic pathogen, infecting plants already weakened by environmental stresses, nutrient deficiencies, or mechanical injuries.
Diseases and susceptible hosts. This pathogen causes a disease commonly referred to as Pestalotiopsis dieback or leaf spot. It has a broad host range, notably affecting various coniferous species such as junipers, arborvitae, and pines, as well as broad-leaved ornamental plants like rhododendrons and camellias. Symptoms typically manifest as brown lesions featuring small, black, fruiting bodies that indicate the presence of spores.
