This microorganism is the causative agent of a severe disease known as Phacidium blight or snow blight of cranberries. It acts as an obligate parasite that specifically targets vegetative plant tissues, causing significant economic losses in regions with temperate and cold climates.
Diseases and host crops: The primary host crop susceptible to this pathogen is the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). The disease manifests as the necrosis of shoots and leaves, which turn brown and gradually die back. A hallmark of the infection is the development of small, black fungal fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the surface of the infected tissue, leading to the total destruction of the plant's above-ground biomass if not addressed.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Phacidium vaccinii is intrinsically linked to the winter dormancy of the host plant.
